Asylum Tracker — US asylum statistics from public EOIR, USCIS and ICE data

How to Check USCIS Case Status Online

Start with Case Status Online from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Use the receipt number for the application you want to check, including a Form I-589 filed with USCIS when a receipt number is available. Statistics describe past decisions, not individual outcomes. Not legal advice.

Find and enter the receipt number

Find the number on your USCIS receipt notice. Common prefixes include IOE, WAC, EAC, SRC, LIN, NBC and MSC; this is not an exhaustive list. Copy the actual number from the notice rather than inferring an office or timeline from its prefix.

USCIS instructs users to omit hyphens and retain other characters, including an asterisk if it is part of the receipt number. Follow the current portal instructions. Your A-number is not interchangeable with the receipt number. The official tool offers a Spanish language option.

What the status can and cannot tell you

A receipt message records acceptance of the filing; it is not approval. A request for evidence refers to a notice with instructions and a deadline. An interview-scheduling message should be read with the interview notice. A decision message should be read with the written decision.

Read the notice itself for the action required. The status tool does not provide legal advice or a reliable completion forecast. A message that has not changed does not, by itself, establish an error or a denial.

Form I-589 and the right agency

Form I-589 is the Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. A USCIS status applies to the filing handled by USCIS. If your asylum matter is before an immigration court, use EOIR for court hearing information. Do not substitute a USCIS status for a court notice.

Use the official I-589 page for current form instructions. This guide does not set filing deadlines, decide eligibility or explain how to prepare legal answers.

If the number is not recognized or information is missing

Compare the number with the receipt notice and confirm you are using USCIS’s tool. For unresolved questions, use the official Contact Center or your USCIS online account if available. Keep private identifiers out of Asylum Tracker URLs and messages.

Processing times and published asylum-office data

Use USCIS’s official processing-times tool for the forms and categories it publishes. If it does not publish a time for your selection, that is not evidence of a zero-day wait. We do not reproduce that tool or invent an I-589 estimate.

Our USCIS analytics show published affirmative-asylum receipts and outcomes by office and period. Check their actual coverage and missing periods. These historical counts cannot tell you the status of a receipt number or forecast an interview.

These are the latest published office periods loaded into our dataset, not current case status. The import has an FY2024 coverage gap; no missing period is treated as zero. See the analytics page for complete coverage and source notes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my A-number to check USCIS case status?

Case Status Online uses a USCIS receipt number, normally three letters and ten digits. Use the number on your receipt notice, not your A-number.

Can I check Form I-589 online?

Applicants with a USCIS receipt number can use the official status tool for their USCIS filing. Court hearing information belongs in EOIR’s system. Read your official notices to identify the agency handling the matter.

Does an unchanged status mean my case was denied?

No. A status that has not changed does not establish denial. Read the written notices and use official USCIS contact channels for unresolved questions.

Do these statistics give an I-589 processing time?

No. Our USCIS data describe published receipts and outcomes. They are separate from USCIS’s official processing-time estimates and cannot predict an individual interview or decision date.
