Open Asylum Data & Public API
Explore public immigration and asylum statistics, source notes and methods. Statistics describe past decisions, not individual outcomes. Not legal advice.
How we estimate
EOIR grant rate means grants divided by grants plus denials for asylum merits decisions, excluding other closures. Rates require at least 2 decisions; rankings require at least 30. Proceedings history can extend to 1951; the first recorded asylum merits month in this import is Dec 1972. Each dataset states its own coverage. Do not interpret proceedings coverage as asylum decision coverage. Reconstructed pending counts may differ from agency totals. Historical judge-code attribution is not verified personal tenure.
Methodology and limitations
EOIR grant rate means grants divided by grants plus denials for asylum merits decisions, excluding other closures. Rates require at least 2 decisions; rankings require at least 30. Proceedings history can extend to 1951; the first recorded asylum merits month in this import is Dec 1972. Each dataset states its own coverage. Statistics update after new agency publications are imported and checked. EOIR snapshots are generally monthly; USCIS and ICE publish on separate schedules. Updates are not real time and no fixed import date is guaranteed.
Only aggregate statistics are exposed. The API does not retrieve individual immigration cases, identify detained people or predict legal outcomes. Coverage gaps and null values mean unavailable data, not zero events.
Publisher and corrections
Asylum Tracker publishes independent aggregate analyses of public agency data. It is not affiliated with EOIR, USCIS or ICE. No individual legal advice or official case-status service is provided.
Publisher and corrections
To document a possible correction, include the canonical page URL, source release, observation period and disputed metric. Compare the public API response and linked agency source. Do not include A-numbers, receipt numbers or private case details.
A direct project contact channel has not yet been published.
Reuse and attribution
The public API is free to read and reuse for analysis and reporting with attribution to Asylum Tracker and the named agency source. Identify the endpoint, parameters, reporting period, data version and access date; preserve definitions and limitations. These reuse terms apply to our aggregate output, not the application code, agency seals, third-party content or rights we do not own. Original agency publications retain their own terms. No accuracy or completeness warranty is provided.
Public API
All endpoints are read-only GET requests returning JSON with data and meta fields. No API key is required. The public API limit is 300 requests per minute per client IP; excess requests receive HTTP 429. Cache responses, respect Retry-After when supplied and avoid repeated bulk requests.
EOIR decision endpoints accept period=12m|month|all|YYYY|fyYYYY, from/to=YYYY-MM, state, court, judge, nationality, represented=0|1, custody=D|R|N|U and min_decisions (a positive integer, default 2). from/to override the period. Trend endpoints accept granularity=year|quarter|fy|month|auto; compare=prev requests the previous window where supported. Backlog supports national, state, court and judge scopes; calendar data support national or court scope. These endpoints do not support nationality/representation/custody filters. Rankings require at least 30 decisions, or the requested floor if higher. Nationality codes are EOIR codes, not ISO country codes. Judge lists accept limit (1–1000) and offset (0–100000); nationality lists accept limit (1–500). Source-specific endpoints have different periods and filters. Invalid parameters return HTTP 422; unknown entities return HTTP 404.
