How to Use the ICE Detainee Locator and Get Help

Start with the official Online Detainee Locator System (ODLS) from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A missing result does not mean the person is not detained. If you cannot find someone, use official detention contacts below. Statistics describe past decisions, not individual outcomes. Not legal advice.

Use the person’s nine-digit A-number and correct country of birth in the official locator. If there are fewer than nine digits, add leading zeros. Country of birth is not necessarily nationality; EOIR’s separate court tool asks for nationality.

If you do not have the A-number, use the person’s first and last names and country of birth. Enter the name exactly, including a hyphen if it is part of the last name. Supply the date of birth when the portal requests it. Follow the fields currently shown by ODLS.

If there is no result

Recheck spelling, identifying information and the country of birth. Records may be unavailable or delayed, and the locator has coverage limits. Do not assume a person was released, removed or is not detained because a search is empty.

There is no guaranteed update interval in this guide. Do not delay contacting the responsible detention office simply to wait for a website result.

Contact the detention office or facility and find legal help

Use ICE’s official field-office directory and select Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), the detention and removal office. Some ICE directory entries belong to other units; recruiting emails and crime-reporting tip lines are not detention case contacts.

If a facility is identified, verify its contact and visitation instructions in ICE’s official detention-facility directory before traveling. For unresolved detention questions, ICE lists its detention information line at 1-888-351-4024. Use current official hours and instructions; this guide does not promise a response time.

EOIR’s pro bono list links providers by immigration court and describes service limits. Contact a provider directly to ask about availability and eligibility. Asylum Tracker does not arrange representation.

Published facility data and map

Choose a facility below to view published historical averages. These data are separate from ODLS and cannot confirm who is held there. A listed facility and an approximate map pin are not proof of current operation or a verified street address.

Published ICE facilities

This historical dataset is not a directory of current custody or a confirmation that a facility is operating today. Verify contacts in ICE’s official directory.

Key facts

The two search modes use an A-number plus country of birth, or biographical information plus country of birth.

ODLS cannot search records of people under 18. Its coverage is limited and it is not a complete record of every agency’s custody.

No result is not proof of release, removal or absence from detention. Contact ICE for confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How can I search without an A-number?

Use the official biographical search with first and last names and country of birth, plus the date of birth when requested. Names must match the locator’s records.

Does no result mean the person is not detained?

No. Records may be delayed, unavailable or outside the locator’s coverage. Contact the responsible ERO office or identified facility through ICE’s official directories.

Can ODLS locate a person under 18?

ODLS does not search records of people under 18. An empty search cannot establish a child’s location; use official contact routes for help.

Can Asylum Tracker’s facility data locate my family member?

No. The facility selector contains published aggregate statistics and approximate map locations. It is not a personal custody lookup or confirmation that a facility is operating today.
